  3. This file contains the last-minute update that is not found in the user's
  4. manual or in any addendum accompanying the display adapter.  Please read
  5. it before proceeding to install anything.

  9. IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  11. For Information on Running the INSTALL program please refer
  12. to your User's manual in the Section:
  13.  
  14.             "CONFIGURING YOUR CARD", and "RUNNING THE INSTALL PROGRAM"

  16. GENERAL INFO for NEW INSTALLs:
  17.  
  18. - In order to match the card to your monitor and to your system
  19.   configuration YOU MUST RUN "SET POWER UP CONFIGURATION"  BEFORE INSTALLING
  20.   ANY DRIVERS
  21. - PLEASE REFER TO "MAIN SELECTION MENU" in your User's Manual.
  22. - After running "SET POWER UP CONFIGURATION", run Install Device Drivers
  23.   and EXIT back to DOS.
  24.  
  25.                   READ THE "MACH.WRI" file
  26.  
  27. WHEN YOU INSTALL WINDOWS DRIVERS,  THE "INSTALL DEVICE DRIVERS" WILL CREATE
  28. A FILE NAMED "MACH.WRI" ON YOUR HARD DISK IN THE WINDOWS DIRECTORY YOU
  29. SPECIFIED.

  31. PLEASE READ MACH.WRI AFTER BRINGING UP WINDOWS FOR THE FIRST TIME
  32.  
  33. GENERAL INFORMATION for those wishing to UPDATE WINDOWS DRIVERS only
  34. - Select "INSTALL DEVICE DRIVERS" from the Main Selection Menu.
  35. - Install Device the Drivers desired, and EXIT back to DOS.
  36. - Run Windows SETUP and select the ATI mach32 display driver.
  37. - Start Windows.

  42. Special Note on AutoDesk Driver
  43.  
  44. If you will be using our high resolution driver for AutoCAD 386, AutoShade
  45. or 3D-Studio,  please note:
  46.  
  47. 1)  If you have 1MB on your display adapter,  you may select any
  48.     resolution as long as there is sufficient memory to support
  49.     the selected display mode/refresh rate (refer to chart at the
  50.     back of the manual).
  51.  
  52. 2)  If you have 2MB on your display adapter,  you are advised to select any
  53.     resolution having 256 colors or higher.

  61. INSTALL HINTS and TIPS
  62.  
  63.  
  64. The ATI Graphics Ultra Pro and Graphics Ultra + video adapters represent
  65. state of the art Personal Computer video technology.  While following IBM
  66. VGA standards for producing VGA text and graphics, these adapters require
  67. additional system resources to produce accelerated video capabilities.
  68. Adapter installation, while greatly simplified through the ATI INSTALL
  69. utility, requires a step by step methodical approach to ensure that the
  70. adapter does not conflict with other system resources and will
  71. provide optimized performance.
  72.  
  73. The following technical information is a basic outline of the steps required
  74. to install an ATI Graphics Ultra Pro or Graphics Ultra + video adapter.
  75.  
  76.  
  77. 1)  Upon removing the Graphics Ultra Pro/+ card from the box, record the
  78.     serial number (found on the non-component side of the card) and the BIOS
  79.     version (located on a paper label on a plug-in component on the
  80.     component side of the card) in your user manual.
  81.  
  82.     This serial number will assist Customer Support and also ensure that
  83.     the Warranty form can be properly completed.
  84.  
  85.  
  86. 2)  Check the system hardware for internal modems, FAX cards or LAN cards
  87.     which may be using addresses at COM4 (2E8) or addresses between the
  88.     range of 2E0 to 2EF.
  89.  
  90.     Also ensure that LAN cards, scanner cards and other peripheral adapters
  91.     are not using upper memory addresses between C000 and C7FF.
  92.  
  93.     If you have a system containing an on-board video controller,
  94.     consult your owners manual on how to disable it.
  95.  
  96.     Check and record how much system memory is installed on the
  97.     system motherboard.
  98.  
  99.  
  100. 3)  Review your CONFIG.SYS file to determine if a Memory Manager DEVICE
  101.     driver is being loaded.
  102.     Memory Manager device drivers, such as EMM386, QEMM and 386MAX, may
  103.     interfere with the ATI installation software and should not be loaded
  104.     until the ATI video adapter has been completely installed
  105.  
  106.     (for more information on ATI recommended Memory Manager
  107.     configurations, please consult ATI Technical Note: TN069).
  108.  
  109.  
  110. 4)  After powering down your system, remove your old video adapter (or
  111.     disable the on-board video controller) and plug-in the ATI Graphics
  112.     Ultra Pro/+.
  113.  
  114.     Connect the video monitor cable and mouse cable to the ATI card
  115.     and power-up the system.
  116.  
  117.     If the system fails to produce text on the monitor, return to Step 2
  118.     and re-check the installed hardware for address conflicts.
  119.  
  120.     If no obvious conflicts are present, carefully remove all non-
  121.     essential peripheral adapters (scanner, FAX/modem, audio, CD ROM cards,
  122.     etc) to determine the nature of the conflict.
  123.  
  124.     If the system still does not boot, contact ATI Customer Support with
  125.     the system brand and model number.
  126.  
  127.  
  128. 5)  Once the system has properly booted, place Disk 1 of the supplied ATI
  129.     Graphics Ultra Pro/+ disks into the appropriate disk drive and run the
  130.     INSTALL program.
  131.     The INSTALL program may report that it has found the graphics card to
  132.     be in a "new or changed configuration".  If this message appears, press
  133.     any key to have the INSTALL program update the Graphics
  134.     Ultra Pro/+ EEPROM.
  135.  
  136.  
  137.     If the INSTALL program returns to DOS and states that it could not find
  138.     a 68800 based video card in the system, return to Step 3 to remove any
  139.     memory manager device driver from your CONFIG.SYS file.  If a different
  140.     Error Message appears, carefully record the error message, follow any
  141.     instructions listed in the message and contact ATI Customer Support if
  142.     the problem persists.

  144. 6)  When the INSTALL program has completed loading and initialization, it
  145.     will present the following screen:

  164.     The "Set Power-Up Configuration" option must be run on new installations
  165.     to inform the card of what monitor is attached and to determine what
  166.     video card options will be enabled when the system is booted.
  167.     Highlight the "Set Power-up Configuration" option and press Enter to
  168.     get to the following menu:

  192.     Selecting the "Monitor Type" option will produce a list of supported
  193.     monitors.
  194.     If your monitor is shown, select it from the list and press Enter.
  195.     If your monitor does not appear, select the Custom option from the list.
  196.  
  197.     The Custom option will allow you to configure the vertical refresh
  198.     rate your monitor supports for each resolution (ie: 640x480, 800x600,
  199.     1024x768 and 1280x1024).
  200.     It is important to review your monitor manual to determine the proper
  201.     refresh rates to use for each resolution.  Selecting a refresh rate
  202.     that is too high could damage your monitor.
  203.     (for more information on Custom Monitor configurations, please consult
  204.      ATI Technical Note: TN068).
  205.  
  206.     The "Power-Up Video Mode" option determines the DOS text and graphics
  207.     capabilities when the card is powered-up.  Unless the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
  208.     contains programs which can only run on an EGA, CGA or MDA video
  209.     adapter, this option should remain set to VGA (CV80).  This will provide
  210.     the highest level of DOS text and graphics resolution.
  211.  
  212.     The ATI Graphics Ultra Pro/+ card can use 16 BIT ROM Access to improve
  213.     DOS Text performance.
  214.     In some systems and/or some system configurations, however, this can
  215.     cause unusual operational problems (booting problems, applications
  216.     failing, Windows problems, etc).
  217.  
  218.     To ensure the most compatible video card configuration, the
  219.     "VGA ROM Configuration" setting should be set to 8 BIT.
  220.     This will not significantly impact on DOS performance and will not
  221.     impact on Windows performance.
  222.  
  223.     The Mouse port on the Graphics Ultra Pro/+ can be configured to use one
  224.     of two hardware port addresses and an IRQ value between 2 and 5.
  225.     For most systems the mouse can be configured to use the Primary address
  226.     and IRQ 5.
  227.  
  228.     It is important to ensure that no other devices are using the
  229.     selected IRQ or port addresses as unusual mouse operation will result.
  230.     If another mouse, trackball or pointing device is going to be used on
  231.     the system, the Mouse Configuration can be left at Disabled.
  232.  
  233.     The "Coprocessor Bus I/O" selection sets the access method the card
  234.     will use when sending or retrieving data from its low memory registers.
  235.     For optimum performance, this setting should be configured as
  236.     "Auto-select".
  237.  
  238.     Setting the "VGA Bus I/O" setting to "16 bits" provides optimum VGA and
  239.     SuperVGA graphics performance.  The "8 bits" option would be used if a
  240.     monochrome or CGA video adapter were installed in the same system with
  241.     the Graphics Ultra Pro/+ card.
  242.  
  243.     The "Memory Aperture" feature allows for improved graphics performance
  244.     by placing a video frame buffer in system memory address space.
  245.     This frame buffer can only be used if unused system memory address
  246.     space is available.
  247.  
  248.     In ISA systems, due to limitations of the system architecture,
  249.     there must be less than 12MB of main system memory to allow the Memory
  250.     Aperture to be enabled.
  251.     If the memory space is not available, this feature must remain disabled.
  252.  
  253.     Enabling the "VGA Zero Wait State RAM" option will improve DOS text and
  254.     graphics performance.
  255.     This feature relies on compatible system bus timing and may not function
  256.     properly on all systems.
  257.     If DOS graphics or system operation is unstable, disable this option.
  258.  
  259.     The "VGA Memory Size" option sets the amount of graphics memory made
  260.     available to VGA and SuperVGA applications.  ATI VGA drivers and VESA
  261.     drivers may restrict resolution and color depth capability if not enough
  262.     VGA Memory is allocated.
  263.  
  264.     Most mach32 drivers (ie: ACAD and Windows) override the VGA Memory
  265.     setting to ensure that all video memory is available to the Mach32 when
  266.     running in accelerated modes.
  267.  
  268.     The default VGA Memory Size of 512k is best for most users
  269.     UNLESS the Graphics Ultra Pro/+ has only 1MB of memory.
  270.  
  271.     Graphics Ultra Pro/+ with only 1 MB, the option of "Shared"
  272.     should be selected.
  273.  
  274.     Once all of these options have been set, the "F10" key should be
  275.     pressed to save the configuration.  While the INSTALL program is
  276.     programming the EEPROM, a
  277.     "Selected Memory Aperture configuration may conflict.." error
  278.     message may appear.  If the system has 12MB or more system memory and
  279.     the "Memory Aperture" feature has been disabled, ignore this message.
  280.     If the system CMOS configuration has Video BIOS Shadowing enabled, you
  281.     will be instructed to reboot the system once the programming of the
  282.     EEPROM has been completed.
  283.  
  284.     If this message does not appear, proceed to Step 7, otherwise, reboot
  285.     the system and run the INSTALL program.
  286.  
  287.  
  288. 7)  From the INSTALL program Main Menu, select the "Test Graphics Adapter"
  289.     option.  Running the "Test VGA Color Modes" and the "Run Accelerator
  290.     Diagnostics" tests will assist in determining if the
  291.     Graphics Ultra Pro/+ is operating properly.
  292.  
  293.     Record any error messages and check the VGA ROM Access and VGA Zero
  294.     Wait State ROM settings, in the Set Power-up Configuration Menu,
  295.     before calling Customer Support.
  296.  
  297. 8)  If the diagnostics have passed, reconfigure the memory manager device
  298.     drivers in your CONFIG.SYS file, complete the Warranty Registration card
  299.     and install any application specific device drivers.
  300.     The installation is now complete.
